Dearly beloved wife

We have discovered that Captain John married Anne Willcox on the 12th October 1858 in the St Barnabas Church in Auckland. We had initially dismissed that date as Anne was so young, she was 17 years old. He is listed as 28 on the marriage certificate but was actually 36. He is also listed as a "widower". The marriage seems to have been a happy one and they had 9 children, 5 boys, and 4 girls (more than we first thought). When Anne died in 1923 her death notice read:
On April 28th at her daughter's residence, no.10 Baker Street. Anne, the dearly beloved wife of the late Captain John Austen, aged 81 years. Deeply regretted.

  1. Really sorry to leave another comment. I've got the marriage certificate of their son who married my grandmother's mother Mini Rose. I think we might be related in some way, it says on the certificate parents of Albert (their son) are Annie Wilcox and James (John) Austen.

  2. Hi
We have Alfred Edward Austen marrying Minnie Rose Mackie in 1900. Austen children were Mary Jane (1859); George (1864); unknown possibly male 1867; unknown possibly female 1870; Caroline (1872); Alfred Edward (1879); Joseph (1881) and our guy Arthur Wellesley (1885).
Anne Austen is buried with John Austen in Waikumete cemetary but the records have her as Anne Austin. We have her death certificate she was 81 when she died in 1923 - she is listed as living in NZ for 80 years and being from Somerset. Her mother was called Hannah but we don't have very much more.
Happy to fill in any other gaps if we can!
Haven't postde for ages - life gets in the way.
    Cheers Juliana and Greg
