Rye, Sussex

Pump Street, Rye

According to the 1841 UK census the Austen household comprised:

John age 50, mariner

They lived in Pump Street - possibly in this house.

Also listed as living in the dwelling were  John Ward (39), Eliz (36), James (2) and John (9).

Pump Street is adjacent to the church of St Mary the Virgin. The water house or cistern that gives the street it's name was erected in the churchyard in 1735 to increase water supply to the township.

The Austen children were baptised in St Mary's church, Mary Anne in 1816, George in 1819, Carline in 1822 and John in 1824.
